Posts about Woodwind instruments
I'm writing this to anyone who really wants to march drum corps someday but feels like they can't because they play a woodwind instrument. I'm here to tell you that you absolutely can!
There are countless woodwind players in the activity that learned a brass instrument just to march drum corps (myself included) and have achieved a lot while marching.
There are multiple Open Class/DCA groups that are willing to let you audition on your primary instrument. Some are even willing to teach you. Open class and even world-class groups have more primary woodwind players than you might think
If you learned an instrument before, you can learn another one. It's simple as that.
Do not hinder yourself from having the summer(s) of your life by saying to yourself "Welp, I play woodwind... Guess I can't be in drum corps..." Ask your band director to lend you a brass instrument, get a private lessons teacher if you have to, and go to an auction camp even if you don't have a lot of experience on the horn. I went to my first audition camp with 2 months of experience on baritone, and I got offered a callback and then a contract the next camp. Although I didn't march that season, it taught me that any regular old band kid like myself can do this activity as long as they are willing to improve every single time. Drum corps aren't looking for the best players in the world most of the time, they are looking for people that can prove to improve and get better. As long as you are willing to do that, you have a very high chance of doing this activity and achieving your dreams. The only way you can have a 100 percent chance of getting cut is if you cut yourself by not showing up, so show up. You'll be surprised at what you can achieve.
