Posts about Walgreens
I hope it's okay to post about this here, but I kind of need to vent and I had a very concerning experience today that I thought might be relevant to a lot of people in this community.
So, on Tuesday I saw my doctor for my annual. Not that it should matter but, I'm married and I already have a child, I don't want any more. My husband and I used two forms of protection (IUD+condom) but, in light of *gestures broadly* I was still interested in getting emergency contraception to keep on hand.
I'm Fat and I know that Plan-B doesn't work as well as Ella for Fat people. So, naturally, the good doctor agreed to write me a prescription for three doses (one initial dose + three refills) to keep on hand just in case anything ever goes awry with my usual protection methods.
The prescription was sent on Tuesday.
Here we are on Thursday and I had still not heard from the pharmacy. I've never had that happen -- normally I get text updates "Prescription Received" Then "Prescription Ready for Pick-Up"
Or, sometimes: "Prescription delayed. Out of stock -- order will arrive to pharmacy in 2-3 days."
This time I received no communication at all. So I contacted my doctor's office inquiring if he'd forgotten to send the prescription. No. He had sent it, and to the correct pharmacy. Strange, then.
I called the pharmacy and used the automated system to check my prescription status. No current prescriptions pending. ...Even more strange.
I got through to a pharmacy representative. They confirmed that my prescription was received on Tuesday. The guy said "We received the prescription, but we do not have this medication in stock. We would need to order it."
"So has it been ordered?" I asked. "No." He said. And asked me if I wanted them to order it.
[Guys. What the hell.]
I asked him why I had not been contacted and informed of the delay of a highly time-sensitive medication and why the pharmacy had not taken action to order the medication until getting a follow up call from the patient, days later.
He could give me no answer.
I am so lucky. I am lucky that I was getting this preemptively. Most people waiting on this prescription would have needed it urgently.
I regularly fill prescriptions (mostly for my son's allergies and related conditions). I have never had this happen, where the pharmacy just completely sits on their hands for days until I call to follow up.
I have no doubt in my mind that his was done maliciously and intentionally.
EC has a narrow therapeutic window and its chances of effectiveness would have been decreasing by the day. Whoever did this was seriously trying to fuck up someone's life. Even potentially endanger someone's life.
I didn't trust that initial pharmacy to order it. For all I know the pharmacist or tech responsible might intentionally sabotage it in some way.
I called around town and found a different pharmacy that could fill it the same day, and had my script transferred there.
But guys. I feel like what happened is incredibly sinister. This is important for people to know -- that there are dangerous people out there like this. That a pharmacy might not call you and tell you "Sorry, filling this is against my beliefs. Try somewhere else."
They might just waste your urgently valuable time, making you think the prescription is in the process of being filled.
So, if you urgently need EC, call and follow up with the pharmacy immediately and try to ascertain if they actually intend to fill the script.
Getting some in advance to keep on hand so you won't have to undertake a potentially time-consuming wild-goose-chase on short notice may also be a good precaution. (The Ella was $0 with my insurance!)
Stay safe out there folks.
