Hey y’all, I’ve learned so much from this subreddit and I’m very excited to finally contribute! Two friends and I just traveled from Thessaloniki to Skopje without renting a car and since it seems to be a common question on here with few definitive answers, I thought I’d tell everyone how we did it, and for how much. (€130 from the company “DayTrip”)

First of all, know that in Thessaloniki, most people refer to the country Skopje resides in as “North Macedonia.” And in the country Skopje resides in, most people refer to it as “Macedonia.” I’ve read some articles and can’t understand much more than it being a land dispute so please feel free to ELI5. But it’s apparently very offense to a lot of people in Thessaloniki to say “Macedonia” instead of “North Macedonia.” And in the country itself, it’s very offensive to a lot of people to say “North Macedonia” instead of just plain ‘ole “Macedonia.” Just know that if you’re trying to be polite.

We tried Simeonidis Tours that was recommended here but their bus routes weren’t running between Thes and Skopje at this time of year (Oct 1st, 2021), and we tried VIP Taxi that was recommended in 2018, saying they were quoted €90, but we were quoted €210 (with no room for negotiation).

We ended up confirming the day before with a company called DayTrip (known for getting a driver to take you on excursions around this part of Europe, and back within a day, catering to English speakers). I was a little skeptical because the price was way better than the other taxi companies but we confirmed online and only had to wait a few hours for a driver to accept our trip. I realized I put in the wrong address and sent them an email and they quickly responded, sending me a new confirmation email.

They arrived early and drove fast (not too fast) and the driver even drove us to a local atm and then a restaurant when we realized our bus was late. In the end we were grateful cause it seemed like the best price and the service was excellent.

Please let me know if you have any questions or think of anything I didn’t specify!

P.S. I’m on a bus right now with a couple people that DID end up finding a bus between Thess and Skopje for €35 a person. It was with FP Travel agency through the website Crazy Holiday. The problem is they were dropped off 25 min from Skopje and had to haggle a taxi that ended up being dishonest and charging them more than they expected. That was a €20 taxi ride. So if you’re alone, that may be the way to go, if you have three people, the car is probably your best bet.

Safe travels!

TL;DR DayTrip.com private car for €130.
