Hi all, I need your feedback on a potential project I'm considering creating. It is a bit of a braindump, so feel free to discuss anything below!

The idea is to create a website where developers can register their own games. They could then add Statistics, things like total points, coins, fastest game completion, etc. These statistics can be made public for Highscores, or used as a basis for Achievements. Achievements will be triggered when one ore more statistics reaches a certain value, and add a permanent badge to the users profile.

For developers this would provide an easy way to track highscores, basically have a playfab light for free. Users are given a single account they can use to collect shiny achievements across various games.

This concept is very much modeled after Kongregates achievement system. The major difference is that developers are responsible for hosting their own games.

Now I'm not sure whether to create this website. Obviously it will take a lot of time to create, but I don't want to compete with the existing Plaza, making something that already exists.

I'd like to hear from the community, developers and players alike. Is this something you would use/like/hate/want/support/help create?

Some possible features

  • Cloud-saving with your site account could be done easily, after all your savefile is just another statistic.

  • Rating, reviews, playlists and favourites.

  • Recommendation of undiscovered games.

  • Frontend libraries to easily integrate with the system to avoid manual API calls. Could also provide a login UI to ease the integration process.

  • A notification system to get notified on new uploads by your favourite developer.

  • IAP support to let developers monitize their game without much effort. Could take a small % for server costs. I would like to stress that this is a labour of love, not a project with a desire to turn a profit.

Some possible drawbacks

  • Since only developers can upload their own games, it would take a while to have a solid collection of games. Would have to reach out to developers until the site is widely known.

  • With thousands of players the amount of requests could become very taxing on the server. It would need to be limited per game, making sure developers are not trying to submit statistics too often.

  • Content moderation and abuse prevention can become an involving task as the site grows. This is not something I would like to spend much time on.

Anyway, let me know what you think!
