I know we are not getting vikings because the game is so late in time. But I also really want a Scandinavian civ and while danes makes sense. So does the Kalmar union. While formed in the 14th Century, it encompassed Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway. Eventually becoming lead by the danes.

This is not a complete suggestion. Will add more but would know what you think.

Part of this is translatable to a dane civilization.

Essentially starting out it would be a danish civ and transition into Kalmar Union starting in Castle Age.

My ideas for some features:

In Age IV the Kalmar Union has a revolution mechanic where they can choose to specialize as Sweden, Norway or Denmark. Granting unique bonuses and units that vary.

Early Age the danes still have some viking stuff. Particularly the Harald and his invasion of England so its more a scandinavian civ.

Civilization: Kalmar Union

1397 - 1523 CE

Focus: Fishing, Raiding, Specialized Imperial

Unique Mechanic: Declaration of Independence In Age IV instead of two Landmarks, the Kalmar Union gets three. Each Landmark represents one of the Scandinavian nations and changes you into that nation. Granting different buffs and unique units.

Unique units Longship - Dark Age transport and combat vessel. Strong early but basically useless in lategame. However less capacity than normal transport ships.

Raider/Huskarl - Age I unique unit Axe wielding light armor replaces Men at Arms fast unit that counters spears and gives a small gold amount from damage to builders. Its own unit line into Huskarl from age 2 onward. Higher damage, faster but weaker MaA.

Unique Features

The Sound Toll

Gold Income increase from trade by sea, can trade with your own harbors for less gold than normal trade.

Swedish Lumber - Research makes all wooden units and buildings have higher armor.

Unique Building

Fishery - Age I "Naval Granary" produces longboats fishing boats cheaper than normal dock. Can't build later game naval units so you still need a harbor. Increased food from fishing delivered to it.

Similar to the Rus the Scandes focus on wooden buildings. They can't build stone walls until Imperial but have higher gather rates for wood.

War of Independence Choices

Sweden

Sweden gaining its independence with Gustav Vasa is more focused on Religion and Administrative Reforms.

Unique Research:

Church of Sweden - With the protestant reformation Sweden has a tech to convert to protestantism. This also serves to seize the gold of the churches like irl granting you a one time gold bonus for every priest and church you have built. Swedish Priests buff military units and any new churches look different. Unique church techs are unlocked.

Vasa Reforms - Increases build, gather speed and decreases villager costs late game immensely.

Falu Copper - Allows you to build copper mines for wood. Mined for gold. Faster than trader but weaker than gold mines and less resources.

Unique Unit: Dalakarl - unique crossbowman and spearman for Imperial Age. Light armored, less health and faster but with higher damage. Gains bonus when fighting at higher altitude.

Unique Building: Torp - Replaces house, upon independence turns houses into torps. Generates miniscule amount of food, wood or gold based on choice.

Denmark

Focus: Agriculture, Navy

Scandian Farms - Increases gather speed and food amount from all farms.

Norway

While not independent from Denmark IRL it becomes an alternative focused on mining and fishing buffs.

Will Update over time.
