"Scoop: The highly anticipated Star Wars KOTOR remake has been moved from Texas-based Aspyr Media to a Saber Interactive studio in Eastern Europe.

Parent company Embracer hinted at the transition last week, and Bloomberg News can confirm it today:

In an earnings report, Embracer said it is not "expecting any material delays” from the transition, but of course, developer pivots like this are rare and almost always lead to delays. The game is at least two years away from completion, say people familiar

Embracer hinted that the game was moved due to quality issues. People familiar with development say that Embracer as well as stakeholders Sony and Disney were not happy with Aspyr's progress. Some say they're optimistic about the transition in the long run

I guess it's technically true that there won't be any "material delays" when the game has no release date in the first place"

Listen, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II is a great game. Even despite its age, I still recommend it to anyone who likes Star Wars, RPGs, or just a compelling story. Whether you’ve played it before or want to try it for the first time, I think the Switch is a great place to do that, simply by virtue of its portability. All of the things that are great about this game are great because they always have been; that it still holds up is not because of, but in spite of, Aspyr’s low effort port job.

First of all, this game is from 2004. And it’s running on the same engine as the first game, which was released in 2003. That means this thing is almost 20 years old. Even at the time of its release it wasn’t considered impressive visually, and yet despite the fact that we’re now several console generations past when the game was first released, this Switch version performs no better than the game did on the Xbox.

There are multiple instances throughout the game of frame-rate slowdown. Though it generally runs fine, there are times when the frame-rate will drop significantly when entering specific rooms. It’s not enough to massively impact the experience, but it’s absurd that this issue is still here.

The load times, though not necessarily long, are much longer than they should be. Again, this game is almost 20 years old. There’s no reason any of the loading screens here should last for longer than a second. And yet not only do we have some that last for upwards of five seconds, but the game has to go through two loading screens every time you want to save. This is honestly inexcusable in 2022.

There are actually glitches present in this version of the game that I didn’t experience in the original. There are times when it skips entire lines of dialogue for no reason, times when the letterboxing during cutscenes disappears, and times when your allies stand in place during combat for no reason.

The sound mixing is terrible. The pre-rendered cutscenes play at a much higher volume than the rest of the game, meaning that when one triggers you’ll sometimes be abruptly assaulted with the ridiculously loud sound of a ship’s thrusters or blaster fire. This is such a simple issue to fix that it really shows, perhaps more than anything, how little effort Aspyr put into porting this game.

Like I said before, I think this is a great game that people should still play, and I’m glad to have it on my Switch, but I’m extremely frustrated by the low quality of port we keep getting from Aspyr. The KOTOR games are some of the most celebrated RPGs of all time, and this company couldn’t even muster the energy to do the most basic cleaning up. It makes me nervous that this is the company in charge of the KOTOR remake.
