Posts about Andre Drummond
I feel like people are underestimating the Andre Drummond signing. He’s a huge improvement over Tristan Thompson and Tony Bradley.
Obviously the health and play of the starters matters more than that of the back up center. But whereas Drummond was often a disappointing starter, he’s a solid backup in his prime. He’s not washed up. He’s a genuinely great rebounder with legit size. He can finish at the rim, and although he’s not a great rim protector he can stand tall and won’t be bullied.
His per 36 stats for the last two years are 5.1 offensive rebounds and 11.5 defensive rebounds for a total of 16.5 rebounds, 2 steals and 1.7 blocks, and 18 points. Those are excellent numbers for a back up center.
And Drummond has every incentive to show up in shape and prove he still belongs in the league. If he can play well, he can exercise his player option at the end of the season, so this is essentially a chance to show the league what he can do. He also knows he should get consistent minutes from the Bulls, 20 mpg plus some starts if Vuc is out. So I’m hoping he can develop a rhythm and allow Vuc to rest and play better.
As I said, Drummond isn’t the key to our season by any means, and still less to our future since if he plays well he’ll be gone in a year. But I think Bulls fans will find him surprisingly important, and if I’m right we may miss him when he’s gone.
