To qualify for free school meals you need a household income of <£7,500 a year.

Astonishingly low threshold.

What the hell? Never realized it was that low. On 8k a year it's not possible to raise a child in this country. It's insane.

It's a disgusting system.

We all went to school, and we all eat.

School meals should be free to all and funded out of general taxation.

That way there's no poor shaming and every kid gets a guaranteed hot meal every day.

Christ I would have presumed it was maybe triple that

Have they lowered it? I qualified on a household income of 9k and that was in 2004

I left for Sweden. Fuck the UK.

All kids receive and are welcome to a full buffet breakfast and lunch, free of charge. No costs to student or parents. They also receive a mid afternoon snack. But are encouraged to bring a fruit with them daily, if someone forgets their fruit they are encouraged to share.

Because you know kids learn better and behave better when they have calories.

The UK is a fucking shit show. My rate of tax is around 33% in total, I'm not paying through the nose for these services.

Not true

If you qualify for any of a long list of benefits you can claim FSM.

The £7500 threshold is just one

That is revolting. I think the threshold should be <£37K. That's roughly equivalent to there being two full-time, minimum-wage incomes. If there's any less than that, like a single parent household or one parent being part time, then the children should qualify.

And I STILL think that would be low.

Perhaps the parents are working….

Good lord that is low. That's never right.

that's probably less money that the average banker is going to receive from the government due to tax cuts

The threshold should be 2x minimum wage which automatically adjusts each year based on inflation.

Wow, that's insane.
