Taika on Natalie's Return (Source):

“It’s been about eight years. She’s had a whole other life, and then the love of your life comes back on the scene, and is now dressed like you. It’s a real mindfuck for Thor.”

“I didn’t know we were going to use the storyline of the Mighty Thor character until we started working out the actual story. I was writing and it was like, ‘Wouldn’t it be kind of cool to bring Jane back into the storyline? You don’t want Natalie coming back and playing that same character who’s walking around with science equipment. You know, while Thor’s flying around, she’s left on Earth, tapping her foot going, ‘When’s he going to be back?’ That’s boring. You want her to be part of the adventure.”

“Natalie’s really funny in real life. She’s kind of goofy and has got a great sense of humour, and I don’t think that was exploited enough in the first films.”

The same was true of Hemsworth and unleashing those comedic talents seems a Waititi specialty.

I've heard before that Taika is a fan of letting the actors do their own thing. Taikas humor also makes plenty of room for all the actors to be funny .

Him implying that Natalie is both funny and getting the room to show it in this movie is making me very excited for what's to come :).

She was in Your Highness, I expect her humor to be tangible

Portman was criminally underused and underdeveloped in the first two. Darcy, of all people, often seemed like she had more personality than Jane. I can honestly see why Portman wanted to step away from the role if that's how they were going to treat her.

Hoping this rights the ship for her.

If Taika gives us more of SNL Natalie Portman I’ll be very happy.

god I hope Chris O’Dowd comes back in this movie. I loved him as the guy she went on a date with in The Dark World. I feel like he’d be really good with Taika and just want more of that character

Jumping on the top comment to add: This probably isn’t a picture from filming. Empire does photo shoots in full costume on sets made to look like the movie/show. They always have this slightly off look because of the brightness. It’s like they use regular photo shoot lighting (which is super bright) and it ends up looking kind of poorly edited.

Humor in general wasn't really used enough in the first Thor movies, while I liked them (first one at least), Taika saved the character of Thor with Ragnarok.

“The love of your life” thank you for recognizing this Taika.

Do we know if they're going to do Jane's cancer story?

I always appreciated it in the comics and I think it would translate well into film if done correctly, particularly in a way that is galvanizing and sensitive for actual cancer patients.

It added another dimension to both Jane and Thor, and I think even Cap had a nice moment with Jane iirc.

She had very much the "I'm not a victim and I'm still a badass" sort of response to her cancer prognosis and it was engaging.

I know not everyone likes the Party Thor episode of What If, but Jane was hilarious in that episode. Yes, most of the humor came from her being thirsty for Thor... But like, same.
