I've forgotten what "normal politics" feels like.

We're over a half-decade into the Trump/post-Trump era, and the bygone era of Obama vs. McCain politics, "normal" politics, feels so long ago that it's almost impossible to feel what the vibe was like. The era before Qulty QAnon Antifa 1/6 Marjorie-Taylor-Green Covid nonsense, a world when there were still just 2 genders, where politicians still pretended to be reasonable.

I.....want normalness again.

When you listen to a political debate and want to fall asleep, THAT'S A GOOD THING. Politics should be boring and about the nitty gritty details. The drama in the past decade is not normal at all, and just hampers the efficient functioning of government.

Your reading entertainment news. It’s designed to be crazy and dysfunctional. Just like soap operas and pro wrestling.

If you want normal politics go talk to your municipal representative for your town and see if you can help out.

If it’s like my experience, you’ll start meeting real people dealing with real problems. Then all the political bullshit vanishes and it’s just people dealing with people. With the good guys being the ones actually doing things, and the bad guys being the ones only taking and making things worse for those around them.

Fair warning. No group or ideology has a monopoly on assholes.

To get back to normal we need to get rid of social media. That was when things got really messed up.

They really had me agreeing until that really unnecessary part. I stg it’s like people think that every liberal in the US wants the xim/xer/xyz gender, when in reality that’s a very small minority of people and they don’t even want everyone to “convert” they just want respect for who they are

ironically participating in the abnormal politics of pointless identity culture wars while decrying the pointless culture wars.

protip: if you angry about somebody else's personal life (that doesnt affect others), you've been manipulated by somebody to sell you something

If it's any consolation, this has happened before. Populist uprisings happen on a cyclical basis in the US, any time large portions of the electorate feel that their needs are not being met by the ruling class. Read up on Andrew Jackson's presidency, or William Jennings Bryan's candidacy in 1896. We just haven't had one in a while because World War II completely disrupted normal economics and politics for about 70 years. One thing that you realize reading history is that our era isn't abnormal, it's normal. The era between 1939 and 2008 was abnormal. What we're seeing now as World War II fades out of living memory is a return to the prewar normal. That is (edit: unequivocally not) a good thing, of course, and modern communications does have a very worrying way of speeding up and intensifying things, but there's plenty of precedent for everything we're going through.

Our era is definitely abnormal in American History, we have never suffered an attempt at domestic overthrow of government especially not by a sitting President. The closest you get is the deadlocked election of 1800 and the 2020 overthrow attempts go well beyond Aaron Burr and the Federalists

I don't know man. The 60's was really wild, fighting segregation and domestic terrorism (on the left and the right). And that was just 15-25 years after WW2.

Normal left when the Tea Party entered the room.

Only way to get back to a more reasonable Political field would be if the Parties would try and get rid of their far sides.

12

Which politicians specifically do you think both parties should get ride of?

3

Where would they go? Each party is a collection of various special interests and ideologies that join in or leave depending on the social contract they make with the parties.

I tried to talk to a progressive radio host about that. Apparently every fringe grievance or concept simply must be addressed NOW.

the bygone era of Obama vs. McCain... The era before Qulty QAnon Antifa 1/6 Marjorie-Taylor-Green Covid nonsense

This nonsense was already rearing its head in that area. Consider, for example, the infamous McCain town hall where an attendee said of Obama “I can’t trust Obama. I have read about him, and he’s not, um, he’s an Arab.”

a world when there were still just 2 genders

Transgender and nonbinary people have always existed.

And remember how McCain responded? He shut that shit down real quick.

Yeah, the two genders thing had big "One the side, the president of the united states was crazy. On the other side, something on reddit annoyed me. These things are the same." energy.

Trans used to be two genders, just switched, and then there were androgynous folks but genderqueer people aren’t that
