TIL that Alice Munro, co-founder of a bookstore with her then-husband Jim, started writing after reading some of the store's stock and thinking "I can write better books than this." In 2013, she won the Nobel Prize in Literature.

I remember norm macdonald coming to her defense when the author of American psycho started shitting on her after winning the prize

Bret Ellis went off about her being over rated and how she always will be now that she won the prize and

Norm with I can only assume was old Harold Delaneys help

" Bret Easton Ellis saying Alice Munro is over rated= bealtemania saying the The Beatles is overrated, not only can he not write, he can't read"

"It's interesting to see Alice Munro the writers writer criticized by Bret Ellis the talentless hacks talentless hack"

And a bunch of others.

Jesus

Alice Munro is to literature what Lee Iacocca is to automaking. @BretEastonEllis is to literature what Lee Iacocca is to literature.

It is interesting to see Alice Munro, the writer's writer, criticized by @BretEastonEllis , the talentless hack's talentless hack.

That one got a good chuckle out of me

And here I always assumed the writing came first. TIL.

The writing did come first -- she had published at least a dozen short stories in the '50s and early '60s by the time the store opened in 1963.

If anyone's reading this thread and hasn't read any Alice Munro - please do! She's incredible.

Lots of short fiction at the link. Pick one at random. She's consistently perfect.

…how did it never occur to me that Munro’s was Alice Munro’s.

Well it was more Jim Munro's, her ex-husband's, although I believe she was involved with the original investment. He eventually sold it to four staff members when he wanted to retire.

I always thought the name of the store was a coincidence. It's a great store.

I spotted Lady Gaga on the patio at Milestones. We shared a moment.
