A few issues

We’re a week in and there are a couple of things I can’t figure out. Any help would be appreciated.

  1. Why does it sound like the wiper goes when we back out of the garage? My husband and I both noticed it separately.

  2. Google maps on CarPlay- it doesn’t show turn by turn on the screen and my phone just has a list of turns and both are worthless- what setting am I missing or do I need to use Apple Maps?

  3. Ambient lighting- is it tied exclusively to mode or can you force it to stay one color somehow? Love sport mode, hate the red.

  4. Can you have it make a sound when the hatch closes? We’ve been almost bonked a few times.

  5. Seat memories- they seem to switch? But honestly super annoying they don’t move automatically or once you just click it while sitting in the car with the door closed bc you forget it doesn’t just move it.

  6. Garage door opener- you have to use it while the car is it gear? Why????

Thanks! Seems like a long list but it’s mainly ignorance on our part. It’s a great car.

It seems most of the other questions have been answered, but here are some I can answer.

  1. All previous VW and Audi products I've owned reposition the wipers every few starts, but the ID tends to do this on almost every start. This is to reduce the wear of the wiper blade rubber and to help prevent a semi-permanent line on the windshield from the rubber "setting".

  2. This is a security feature. If you put the car in Park and foot off of the brake pedal after you stop, it essentially puts the car in the equivalent of ACC on an ICE car which turns off most of the electronics. Homelink is designed to be powered off when the vehicle is not in use so thieves cannot open your garage if say you park outside in front of your garage. You may be able to avoid putting the car into gear if you get in the car, press the brake pedal to power everything on after you're seated, which should also power on Homelink.

Got it. Our old cars both work after the car is off but not after you open the door. Same thing just different order I see. I just put it back in drive. Eventually I’ll remember.

On point 1) the wipers move down from the service position to the driving position that is lower then the end of the hood for better aerodynamics.

I am so glad it’s the wipers 😂

  1. There is a setting to run the wiper when you go into reverse, might want to make sure that’s not turned on?

  2. Once you’re in CarPlay, there’s a little button that looks like a flag or a couple of white boxes in the lower left. This will cycle through the screen layouts. I personally like the one with music on the left and smaller directions on the right.

Others have been addressed below!

Okay now I’m really curious how you pulled that off. I use that CarPlay screen all the time, but cannot figure out how to change the layout from anything except map on left, and small boxes for directions, calendar, and ‘now playing’ on the right side!

I think OP is talking about the screen on the iPhone: it only shows the list of turns on the iPhone itself when it is mapping on CarPlay on the ID4 screen.

May 2021 ID4 here - similar response to others but thought I would share one tip that took me a while to figure out:

4) It only beeps in certain situations - depending on HOW you are closing the trunk. It took me forever to figure out how to close the trunk from the drivers seat. Opening it is no big deal, but for some reason, regardless of park, drive, etc. you need to keep your foot on the brake and hold the hatch switch to CLOSE to the trunk from the drivers seat. You cannot just hold it by itself like every other car in the world. Also, closing it this way will make it beep.

Wait where is the hatch button???

On point 6) The car needs to be "On" I get in press the break pedal and then I can use the Home Link mirror.

  1. I hear this too! I can only validate you though. Not sure why it makes that sound; it’s not every time for me.

  2. Use Apple Maps if you want turn by turn on the screen

  3. I did change the color of my lighting. Not sure if it’s tied to mode.

  4. I’m unsure. Haven’t looked into it. Edit. I just watched a YouTube video by EV Tips and Tricks that if you use the foot swipe feature to close the tailgate, it will make 3 beeps before closing.

  5. Either click it once while outside the car or if you are sitting in the seat you have to hold it.

  6. I don’t know anything about this.

I don’t have a lot of help but just wanted to validate you on the wipers at least. :)

The foot thing is great. My old car had a foot open but not close so I forget that’s an option. Thanks!

  1. maybe the ABS. I hear it too, not wipers but something initiating.

  2. google maps look at the center screen.

  3. use "custom" lighting mode I think

  1. I’d assume you are talking about a sound like wipers moving on the dry while wipers not moving at all, this is due to the brakes sticking, yep mine does it can’t believe it’s happening on a legacy manufacturer car, sound like a rubber rub.

  2. Using Google maps you’d see route with turn info on top in the main screen, second screen support (steering mounted) isn’t available on Google maps or Waze via CarPlay. Only Apple Maps and Garmin has support for this.

  3. You can change this in settings.

4.not enough info, and how bonked genuinely curious

5. Need to hold menu to set to person, unless you are outside the car then one press works. Also someone (a golden human) here had a how to link profile to seats.

6. If you can get a HomeKit garage opener and you’d be able to control your garage via your CarPlay interface, Homelink should be killed IMHO

Finally it’s a car which has lot of potential, but it’s wasted with really really crappy software and broken implementation.

Our garage opener has an app so I guess that might be easier. Didn’t even occur to me to use that. It’s so quiet I’ve run i to it closing twice. I’m used to my old one beeping so it’s entirely on me.

So helpful thank you!

  1. My wipers do not do anything when backing out of the garage. Maybe you're accidentally bumping the wiper stalk when reaching for the gear selector?

  2. I use Google Maps on Android Auto, which shows the turn by turn on both screens.

  3. I chose a color in the ambient lighting settings of the car. The lighting is always that color, but I don't ever switch driving modes.

  4. No

  5. Once in the car, you HOLD the button to switch to apply a memory seat configuration, not just touch it once.

  6. My clicker attached to the visor works any time, lol.

Re the wipers- it makes a noise like the wipers are on but they aren’t. Like one swipe. Like a chunk sound? Hard to describe.

I have an iPhone not android.

Thanks for the rest- the hatch beep is the worst bc it’s almost always me 😂

It does it every time in reverse. I just checked.
