Pound for pound, in my opinion he was the best soul singer or all time. He could do the “rough” soul singing like Wilson Pickett and then turn around and do the “sweet” style more reminiscent of someone like Sam Cooke or Al Green. His performance at the Monterey Pop Festival is just as good as The Who’s or Jimi’s. And he was really turning a corner with “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” which he recorded just before his death. He could have been absolutely massive heading into the 1970’s. Alas…

They finalized recording Dock of the Bay only two days before this broadcast.

Arguably, pop music’s biggest “what if”. The man was on a roll when he died

Truly a loss, the man was a soul genius. When he did festivals, EVERY artist would watch him from backstage; Janis Joplin apparently adored him. He’s definitely in my top 5 of artists I’d see if I had a time machine.

What a shitty coincidence that both Sam Cooke and Otis died right after making songs that seemed to be a breath of fresh air to their music.

He looks so full of life, such a big personality. Gone in a flash. Life is so tragic sometimes.

RIP to an absolute legend on his way up. The fact that the press released the photo of him strapped to his airline chair after he was recovered from the lake still upsets me. They shouldn’t have made that public.

Him and Sam Cooke and a lot of Marvin Gaye songs, I always get that frission, good stuff.

I saw a piece of his plane at the rock n roll hall of fame in Cleveland. I can’t decide if that was tasteless or not…. Feels icky to have it on display.
