I think I'll side with the 50+ other comments saying it says "on or since' but I appreciate your expert opinion. I should take the cursive class at university

In cursive, n has 2 humps, m has 3 humps. It's pretty clearly an n. Of course, less people are going to be able to read cursive as time goes by when many schools are no longer teaching cursive. Depending on the handwriting, too, it can be very hard to read.

It says "on or since"

“On or Since” I’m assuming that they’re saying he had been presumed dead since a certain date.

I agree with all the others who say it looks like ‘ on or since’ and it makes sense for the document to read like that. I just realised how old this is and it’s a very special thing because it really makes us realise that this is something important and it represents a young life given up in combat when times would have been unimaginably severe and poor. It’s actually very sad to read, Thankyou for posting this.

Unfortunately, false advertisements recruited young men to "see the world". There are endless stories of war veterans who claimed to have signed up because they wanted to travel the world, and the only way they could be if someone paid for it. "See the world on Uncle Sam's nickel". This was a distant uncle of mine. He lied about his age to join the British Army and was 17 at his death. I've also found his records in the original victory medal rolls and a pension collection dated and addressed to his father for his service in the war. It's crazy seeing a monetary value put on a life like that. I'm glad to have found so much on record here. As the war progressed, the casualty and death count grew so high that many were excluded from such a luxury (if you can call it that). What's truly crazy is that we did it again no more than two decades later.
