Algorand Foundation announces global winners for its $50M blockchain research and education programme. 10 of the best Universities in the world were selected. These grants will fund research and education hubs on university campuses worldwide and help fund the future of blockchain and cryptography.

The Algorand Foundation, whose mission is to grow the ecosystem of Algorand, the carbon-negative Layer 1 blockchain invented by Turing Award winner and MIT professor Silvio Micali, today announced the 10 winners of its Algorand Centres of Excellence (ACEs) Program with awards totalling $50M over five years. The program received 77 proposals with over 550 participants representing 46 countries; winners were selected by an international panel of 27 experts from a diverse set of disciplines.

The 10 winners lead 36 sub-organizations and are represented by the following primary investigators (PIs):

US

  • University of California, Berkeley - Dr. Natacha Crooks

  • Carnegie Mellon University - Dr. Nicolas Christin, Dr. Elaine Shi, Dr. Ariel Zetlin-Jones

  • University of Florida - Dr. Marko Suvajdzic

  • Yale University - Dr. Charalampos (Babis) Papamanthou

  • Purdue University - Dr. Vassilis Zikas

Australia

  • Monash University - Dr. Joseph Liu

Italy

  • Roma Tre University - Dr. Maddalena Rabitti

Germany

  • Technical University of Munich - Dr. Georg Carle

South Africa

  • University of Cape Town - Dr. Co-Pierre Georg

Singapore

  • Nanyang Technological University, Singapore - Dr. Yonggang Wen

“The selection process was incredibly difficult, given how many excellent applications we received,” said Dr. Hugo Krawczyk, Algorand Foundation’s principal researcher and head of the ACE Programme. “But we’re delighted to see how many bright, talented people around the globe recognize the ability of blockchain technology to fundamentally change and better the world we live in, and we’re very much looking forward to seeing the amazing work the grant recipients do in the coming months and years.”

These grants will fund research and education hubs (each one is an Algorand Centre of Excellence) on university campuses worldwide for multiple years to enable:

  • Multi-disciplinary research in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space

  • College courses, hackathons, accelerators and student-led organizations and activities

  • Development of real-world solutions, applications and use cases

  • Social impact and sustainability projects based on blockchain technology

  • Algorand education and community expansion

“IT WAS THE CRYPTOGRAPHIC, DISTRIBUTED AND SECURITY COMMUNITY THAT CREATED THE TECHNOLOGY ON WHICH BLOCKCHAINS ARE BASED. I APPLAUD THE ALGORAND FOUNDATION FOR GOING BACK TO THE ROOTS AND SUPPORTING THIS KIND OF RESEARCH. THE ACADEMIC GRANTS ARE GOING TO STELLAR TEAMS THAT WILL HELP GROW THE DIVERSE AND INCLUSIVE GLOBAL COMMUNITY OF BLOCKCHAIN RESEARCHERS AND EDUCATORS,”

said Dr. Shafi Goldwasser, an Algorand scientific advisor and winner of the Turing Award (alongside Micali), Gödel Prize and Franklin Medal.

Goldwasser, who received her Ph.D from UC Berkeley and is currently the director of the university’s Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing, added, “And of course, I am proud to see my Bears among the winners!”

ALGORAND FOUNDATION

The Algorand blockchain — designed by MIT professor and Turing Award winning cryptographer Silvio Micali — is capable of delivering on the promise of a borderless global economy. It achieves transaction throughputs at the speed of traditional finance, with immediate finality and near zero transaction costs, and without a second of downtime since it went live in June 2019.Its carbon-neutral platform and unique pure proof-of-stake consensus mechanism solves for the "blockchain trilemma" by achieving both security and scalability on a decentralized protocol.

The Algorand Foundation is dedicated to helping fulfill the global promise of the Algorand blockchain by taking responsibility for its sound monetary supply economics, decentralized governance, and healthy and prosperous open-source ecosystem. Things this like are helping crypto being taken seriously

ALGO has always been about taking crypto seriously that’s why the official sub doesn’t allow price discussions i really enjoy it. Let crypto be about the technological path to economic freedom not hype-train moonshots.

Completely agree.

The philosophical ramifications of blockchain are huge, but unfortunately most peoples perceptions of it are tainted by get rich quick and ponzi schemes.

Partnering with great Universities and on boarding the next generation of great innovators and programmers will go a long way in correcting that perception.

Very cool to see research funds going to academia as it relates to crypto. Should help produce some research that gets taken seriously!

I really can't find reasons not to love Algo.

At the end of the day, you're investing in the people behind a blockchain. Silvio Micali is as legit as they come, he has been a professor at MIT since 1983.

He is basically the Gandalf of blockchain and cryptography.

they're not achieving any mass adoption/network effects whatsoever. All of the top VCs like a16z are focused on virtually every L1 except Algorand.

These are huge challenges.

Same what I thought. This is a great step for mass adoption/education. Slow and steady wins the race.

Universities are vital to on boarding the next generation of great programmers and innovators and changing the public perception of crypto as some scammy pyramid scheme.

I'm super excited about this.

Algorand Foundation is probably the biggest supporter of blockchain research. They understand the importance of this, and they care. Things Algorand do will be valuable not only for Algorand but for the whole blockchain space.

This is really cool, now I'm wishing I decided to go to Purdue.

They have great engineering/math/science programs. I've been there once for a leadership program, I couldn't believe how big the campus was. Basically a city unto itself.

You can stop trying to shill algo with meaningless side facts. The protocol is what matters. A protocol cannot be carbon negative and it hardly matters what awards the founder has won.

Edit: Since OP blocked me on reddit only because of this comment, i apparently cannot answer to anyone replying to my comment. Great way dealing with critisism btw. I also didnt critisize Algo, i critisized OPs way of shilling Algo.

You're arguing semantics with the carbon negative part. A blockchain alone can never be carbon negative but thats obviously not what Algorand is implying. The foundation uses money made from the blockchain to support carbon capture and green projects. The amount of money they give to these projects funds carbon capture that offsets the carbon emitted from running the blockchain.

If the blockchain didn't exist then these projects would not be using it to capture carbon. So, if the blockchain didn't exist, there would be more carbon in the air than if it did.

"...it hardly matters what awards the founder has won."

You know in some cases I might agree with you, but read what work he did to win the award (with Shafi). Think about all of those cryptographic inventions and how they apply to blockchain. He founded the holy grail of Ethereum scaling technology before Ethereum even existed. His work is also inadvertently referenced in Satoshi's Bitcoin whitepaper. When it comes to Blockchain, Silvio Micali is absolutely as legit as it gets.
