Worth noting that this vaccine was designed (in part) by work done by Rosetta@home distributed computing project, which anybody can contribute to with a simple download. It runs on PC/Mac/Linux and uses your computer's spare processing power to do protein folding research for scientists. It only runs while your computer is idle so it won't slow things down. Rosetta@home was the first to produce an accurate 3D Model of the covid spike protein, and was used to identify targets for the vaccine. I have been running Rosetta for over a decade and love to see the cool results that come out of it :). Relevant post on the Rosetta forums.

I'm gonna be a little bitter about this.. I choose to run @Home for years instead of mining back in the early 2000s... Not saying i regret it, but gosh darn it a few bitcoins woulda been nice... then again I would have probably just spent it on beer and pizza at some early point. Better I didn't get those few extra carbs!

FOLD THE PLANET! ;)

That’s awesome! In the early days of the pandemic, discovering and running Rosetta, Folding@Home, and World Community Grid’s OpenPandemics made it feel like I was able to strike back at the virus in some way rather than just hiding helplessly away from the world. Super glad to see it all pay off like this!

I used to do this on my PS3!

These projects are pretty cool. Alternatively there is a crypto version, Banano. Get “paid” to fold proteins.

Maybe I missed this, but how does it compare to Pfizer and Moderna?

I’m going to guess they didn’t compare it to those because it … doesn’t compare.

I want this so badly. It seems I'm hypersensitive to the mRNA ones.

You’re not alone. I can’t get another booster so I’m psyched for an alternative!

A multinational Phase 3 trial involving 4,037 adults over 18 years of age found that the vaccine, now called SKYCovione, elicits roughly three times more neutralizing antibodies than the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine Covishield/Vaxzevria. In these studies, SKYCovione or Covishield/Vaxzevria was administered twice with an interval of four weeks.

They didn't actually test if the vaccine reduces the chance of getting Covid, only that it produces antibodies.

And ignored the fact that 12 weeks is the optimum second dosing interval for the AZ vaccine

So it outperforms one of the least efficacious vaccines apart from Sinovac?

So this is a nanoparticale vaccine. Does that mean it is less likely to produce side-effects?

If by nanoparticle it means it contains just the antigen then you might be trading one set of side effects for another as I do believe this type of vaccine contains a substance known as an adjuvant in order to trigger an immune response.

This seems to be based on similar tech as Novavax which also shows better performance than AstraZeneca or mRNA. No idea how they compare to each other though

2

We don't fully know how good the Novavax shot actually is though, since so few people have actually gotten it. Clinical data is one thing, but there just isn't much (if any) real world data on its efficacy.

Beautiful. Medicine has been absolutely popping off lately.

Didn't the J&J AstraZeneca shot just get big red not safe warning placed on it? Doesn't sound that great of a comparison.
