From the article:

Moderna said giving vaccinated volunteers a boost with mRNA1273.214 increased geometric mean titers, a measure of antibody levels, eight-fold.

That's quite good. As long as we don't get totally surprised by an offshoot variant with no commonalities with the general Omicron family, we should be in a very good position to keep people safe in the fall/winter once this new formulation rolls out for booster use.

Is that compared to another OG booster or compared to no additional booster? I thought using an OG 4th dose already increases antibody titres by 4-5 fold, in which case 8 fold, whilst a nice bump, wouldn't be particularly ground breaking.

I also thought that antibody levels when discussing vaccines were measured typically on a log_10 scale. In which case, and 8-fold increase is really only getting you up less than 1 notch.

I’m still happy for it. But I’m not getting my hopes up for it to be game changing.

Sweet, now we’ll just have to wait for Pfizer to develop and test it and then maybe the fda will look at it.

And then realize the dosage was too low and add a booster before finally applying.

I mean I've been a total pfizer girl but we can mix vaccines right? If pfizer doesn't have one for me as soon as mod3rna I will become a moderna girl in a heartbeat

That's good, because 2.5 years in or so, and 1.5 years or so after the first vaccine authorization, all of our vaccines still target the original strain.

Hopefully we can streamline the entire approval process to be more similar to how updated flu vaccines get approval.

To be fair, that has more to do with the previous updated vaccine candidates performing no better than the original

Excellent point! I wonder how the flu vaccines get approved so quickly and boosters and variant-specific COVID shots are so slow? I mean, COVID is going to be endemic like the flu, so why not treat the vaccines the same? I'd love a combo COVID/flu shot every fall!
